In India, State funerals were initially reserved only for current and former Presidents, Prime Ministers, Union ministers and State Chief Ministers. And the decision to accord a state funeral rested initially with the union government.
A social activist had requested for state funeral honour for Sridevi. Note that It totally depends on state government and has to be approved by the Chief Minister.
Maharashtra government approved and hence sridevi was given state honor. Also the state government decides if the body will be wrapped with the national flag.
I think this change of not reserving honours only for politicians was a good move. Sridevi was conferered this honour purely out of her contribution to arts and the admiration everyone had for her. However, it is debatable that the government might use this honour for their own benefit depending on that instant scenario.
I would still think Sridevi well deserved this and no disrespect to Indian Army or any politicians was made. I personally feel so because for 100 years of cinema she was in 50 years of it. She was indeed the first female superstar and an actor par excellence.
Please don’t confuse this with the funeral honours given to jawans(Soldier) who lost their lives while serving Indian Army. Both are different.
